Installation
Install Bohr AI on macOS, Linux, or Windows using the standalone installer or npm.
Bohr AI ships as a standalone runtime bundle for supported macOS, Linux, and Windows machines. The installer downloads a prebuilt native bundle, so you do not need to preinstall Node.js just to run Bohr.
You do not need to deploy a running web app before changing these commands. What matters is that the installer scripts and release bundles are published at reachable URLs.
One-line installer (recommended)
On macOS or Linux, open a terminal and run:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Dhruvil7694/BohrAI/main/website/public/install | bash
The installer detects your OS and architecture automatically. On macOS it supports both Intel and Apple
Silicon. On Linux it supports x64 and arm64. The launcher is installed to ~/.local/bin, the
bundled runtime is unpacked into ~/.local/share/bohr, and your PATH is updated
when needed.
If you previously installed Bohr AI through a package manager and still see local Node.js errors after a
curl install, your shell is probably still resolving the older global binary first. Run which -a bohr,
then hash -r, or launch the standalone shim directly with ~/.local/bin/bohr.
On Windows, open PowerShell and run:
irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Dhruvil7694/BohrAI/main/website/public/install.ps1 | iex
This installs the Windows runtime bundle under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\bohr, adds its launcher
to your user PATH, and lets you re-run the installer at any time to update.
Bohr currently targets supported desktop and server platforms. iOS and Android are not standalone CLI targets for this installer flow.
Install via npm
If you already have Node.js 20.19.0 or higher installed, you can install Bohr AI directly from npm. This is the fastest path if you are already working in a Node.js environment and prefer a package-manager workflow.
Prerequisites
- Node.js ≥ 20.19.0 — check with
node --version - npm ≥ 10 — ships with Node 20+
- An API key for Anthropic, OpenAI, or another supported provider
If you don't have Node.js yet, use the one-line installer above instead — it bundles its own Node runtime so no separate install is needed.
Global install (recommended)
Install Bohr AI globally so the bohr command is available everywhere:
npm install -g @companionai/bohr After installation completes, verify it works:
bohr --version Project-local install
To add Bohr AI as a dependency in an existing project (useful for CI pipelines or team-shared configs):
npm install @companionai/bohr Then run it via npx or add a script to your package.json:
npx bohr --version Or in package.json:
{
"scripts": {
"bohr": "bohr"
}
}
npm run bohr -- --version Post-install setup
After installing via npm, run the guided setup wizard to configure your model provider and API keys:
bohr setup This walks you through selecting a default model, authenticating with your provider, and optionally installing extra packages. See the Setup guide for details.
Updating
To update to the latest version:
npm update -g @companionai/bohr Or install a specific version:
npm install -g @companionai/bohr@latest Uninstalling
To remove the global installation:
npm uninstall -g @companionai/bohr
This removes the bohr binary and all installed files. Your configuration and session data in
~/.bohr/ are preserved. To remove those as well, delete the directory manually:
rm -rf ~/.bohr Internal client deployments
If you are deploying Bohr inside a client environment, treat the upstream GitHub commands as the default fallback, not the final distribution URLs. The repo supports overriding hosting and release endpoints with deployment variables such as:
PUBLIC_BOHR_SITE_URLPUBLIC_BOHR_INSTALL_BASE_URLBOHR_RELEASES_LATEST_URLBOHR_INSTALL_BASE_URLBOHR_REPO_ARCHIVE_BASE_URL
Set those before building the website or publishing installers so the same codebase can point at the client's own domain, artifact store, or internal web server.
Updating the standalone app
To update the standalone Bohr AI app on macOS, Linux, or Windows, rerun the installer you originally used. That replaces the downloaded runtime bundle with the latest tagged release.
bohr update is different: it updates installed Pi packages inside Bohr AI's environment, not
the standalone app bundle itself.
Skills only
If you only want Bohr AI research skills and not the full terminal runtime, install the skill library separately.
For a user-level install into ~/.codex/skills/bohr:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Dhruvil7694/BohrAI/main/website/public/install-skills | bash For a repo-local install into .agents/skills/bohr under the current repository:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Dhruvil7694/BohrAI/main/website/public/install-skills | bash -s -- --repo On Windows, install the skills into your Codex skill directory:
irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Dhruvil7694/BohrAI/main/website/public/install-skills.ps1 | iex Or install them repo-locally:
& ([scriptblock]::Create((irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Dhruvil7694/BohrAI/main/website/public/install-skills.ps1))) -Scope Repo
These installers download the bundled skills/ and prompts/ trees plus the repo
guidance files referenced by those skills. They do not install the Bohr AI terminal, bundled Node runtime,
auth storage, or Pi packages.
Pinned releases
The one-line installer already targets the latest tagged release. To pin an exact version, pass it explicitly:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Dhruvil7694/BohrAI/main/website/public/install | bash -s -- 0.2.18 On Windows:
& ([scriptblock]::Create((irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Dhruvil7694/BohrAI/main/website/public/install.ps1))) -Version 0.2.18 Post-install setup
After installation, run the guided setup wizard to configure your model provider and API keys:
bohr setup This walks you through selecting a default model, authenticating with your provider, and optionally installing extra packages for features like web search and document preview. See the Setup guide for a detailed walkthrough.
Verifying the installation
Confirm Bohr AI is installed and accessible:
bohr --version
If you see a version number, you are ready to go. Run bohr doctor at any time to diagnose
configuration issues, missing dependencies, or authentication problems.
